At Republic Services, an innovative leader in the environmental services industry, leadership isn’t just a destination — it’s a journey fueled by purpose, innovation, and people. That journey takes shape in powerful ways through the General Manager Accelerated Program (GMAP), a unique, hands-on initiative designed to fast-track top talent into impactful leadership roles across our operations.
In a traditionally male-dominated industry, Republic is breaking barriers and redefining what leadership looks like. And in our latest video, four inspiring women; Catherine Bernhardt, La Shanda Shipp, Molly Johnson, and Kathryn Tekulve; share how the GMAP launched their careers as General Managers and shaped their paths to success.
What Is the GMAP?
The General Manager Accelerated Program (GMAP) is a rigorous, immersive experience designed to prepare high-potential candidates for the role of General Manager in one of Republic Services’ business units. Participants go through an intensive 24-month training rotation across multiple facets of finance, sales, post-collection, maintenance, and operations, all while being mentored by senior leaders.
It’s not just about gaining knowledge. It’s about cultivating the strategic, operational, and people leadership skills needed to run a multi-million-dollar business and impact local communities.
From Classroom to Command: The Women Leading the Way
Catherine Bernhardt
From intern to one of Republic’s youngest General Managers, Catherine now leads operations across Western Montana, from Yellowstone to Glacier. With a background in business from UNC Chapel Hill, she’s passionate about operational excellence, community connection, and paving the way for more women in leadership.

“Leadership is about more than driving results — it’s about making space for others to lead, too.”
La Shanda Shipp
With over 35 years of leadership experience and 8 in the solid waste industry, La Shanda now manages six transfer stations in the greater Los Angeles area. Her leadership extends beyond her role: she’s a mentor, a Special Olympics coach, and a proud voice within Republic’s MOSAIC Council and Black Employee Network.

“GMAP gave me the tools and visibility to drive change — not just in operations, but in culture and community.”
Molly Johnson
A former financial operations professional, Molly transitioned into the world of environmental services after a summer internship with Republic during her MBA. Now, as GM of the South Bend–Elkhart unit, she brings analytical precision and operational grit to every challenge.

“Coming from finance, GMAP was my bridge to hands-on leadership. It’s where strategy meets people — and that’s where I thrive.”
Kathryn Tekulve
An MBA from Harvard and former finance leader in the utility and tech sectors, Kathryn was drawn to Republic’s mission-driven model and its tangible local impact. Now leading operations in the Bay Area, she combines strategy and sustainability to drive real-world results.

“The GMAP gave me the platform — and the confidence — to turn values into action.”
Why GMAP Matters Now More Than Ever
In a world that demands sustainable solutions and inclusive leadership, Republic’s General Manager Accelerated Program is more than a training ground. It’s a launchpad for diverse, driven professionals who want to make a difference. Whether they come from operations, finance, logistics, or outside the industry altogether, GMAP participants gain the tools and the trust to lead with purpose.
And for these four women, GMAP was not just a career move, it was a calling.
Final Thoughts: Breaking the Mold, Building the Future
As Catherine, La Shanda, Molly, and Kathryn show us, leadership in environmental services can and should reflect the world we live in. Through programs like GMAP, Republic Services is investing in a future where women lead boldly, think strategically, and inspire teams to reach higher.
