How Managers Can Shift the Experience of Work

We ask a lot of managers. They are expected to drive performance, foster engagement, lead change, and still make room for empathy and self-care. Yet showing up as a strong leader does not happen automatically when someone gets a title. It requires skill, carries responsibility, and serves as one of the most powerful drivers of employee experience and organizational success.  Forté research has shown that supportive managers are among the strongest predictors of job satisfaction and career growth. Put simply, managers matter deeply.

So what separates a good manager from a great one?

Part of the answer lies in recognizing that work is not isolated from life. People arrive each day shaped by global events, financial stress, and personal challenges. Within this reality, the relationship between a manager and their team becomes especially significant. The everyday choices a leader makes, often subtle and quiet, can influence how someone feels, performs, and grows.

There is no universal formula, but patterns emerge. Supportive leaders tend to foster environments where appreciation is genuine, empathy is present, well-being is modeled, and trust can take root. These qualities often emerge through tone, timing, and intention. With consistency, they build something lasting.

While managers carry much of the responsibility, the broader system plays a role too.

Leadership culture is shaped by collective effort. Organizations contribute through the structures they create, the behaviors they recognize, and the space they offer for development alongside delivery. Employees also play a part through feedback, communication, and shared accountability. When everyone invests in better leadership, it becomes more than just a function. It grows into a shared value.

The takeaway is clear. Great management is not about having all the answers. It is about creating the conditions for people to thrive, and embracing that challenge with care and intention.
