Laid Off? Start Here.

This article incorporates insights from career development leaders and Forté community experts on navigating layoffs and professional transitions.

Getting laid off hurts.

And the hardest part isn’t the job loss. It’s the story you start telling yourself about what it means.

Maybe it means you weren’t good enough.
Maybe it means you’re behind.
Maybe it means everyone else saw something you didn’t.

Pause that story.

A layoff is a business decision. It is not a character assessment. It is not a performance review in disguise. And it is not a prediction about your future.

Companies restructure. Budgets shift. Priorities change.

Your capability does not disappear because your position did.

What matters now is how you respond.

Shock, frustration, embarrassment, even relief. All of it is normal.

Before you rush to update your résumé or draft a LinkedIn post, give yourself space to process. You will make better decisions when you’re thinking clearly.

You do not need to “spin” this immediately. You need to steady yourself first.

In your final meeting, or in a follow-up,  make sure you understand:

  • Your final paycheck date
  • Severance terms
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Reference policy
  • Who you can contact with future questions

If you’re overwhelmed in the moment, it’s okay to say: “I may have additional questions once I’ve had time to process this. What’s the best way to follow up?”

Clarity now prevents stress later.

You do not owe anyone a dramatic explanation.

Keep it simple and factual: “My role was impacted by a company-wide restructuring.”

That’s enough.

Then shift the focus to what matters:

  • What you accomplished
  • What you learned
  • What you’re looking for next

You are not defending yourself. You are describing a transition.

A layoff does not erase your contribution.

You do not need to broadcast panic.

Start with a short list of people who:

  • Know your work
  • Respect your contribution
  • Understand your industry

Reach out with a clear ask: “I’m exploring my next step and would value your perspective.”

Conversations create momentum. Momentum rebuilds confidence.

Careers are rarely linear.

Some moments feel like setbacks. Over time, they become turning points.

  • What do you want more of?
  • What are you done tolerating?
  • What skills do you want to strengthen next?

You do not need every answer this week. You need a thoughtful next step.

Forté’s Guide to Recovering From A Layoff offers additional strategies for rebuilding momentum and moving forward with confidence.
